A 22-year-old man is admitted to the emergency department with complaints of pain in the right ankle. The patient states that he was playing basketball yesterday evening and fell during the game. This morning when he got out of bed, he was unable to put pressure or weight bear on his right foot without experiencing severe pain. He also notes that his right ankle areas is swollen and reddened in color. The emergency department nurse notes 2+ edema, redness, and increased skin temperature over the injured area. The patient received a C-T Scan which confirms that tissue injury has occurred as a result of a sprain of the ankle tendons. A splint is applied to immobilize the injured area. A prescription is given to the patient for ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory agent. The patient also is instructed to apply cold packs to the injured area for the next 24 to 48 hours, followed by alternating applications of heat and cold until the swelling disappears. In addition, the patient is instructed to stay off his right foot as much as possible and to keep it elevated. In three weeks, the patient returns to his primary provider. The redness, swelling, heat, and pain have disappeared. A follow-up x-ray reveals slight soft tissue swelling and no other signs of abnormality.
