The research paper should be a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 7 pages, not including, references and cover page.

Course Paper: The Ethical Follower
This assignment is worth 200 points of your final course grade. This assignment asks you to research a whistleblower who exposed unethical behavior in an organization and the outcome of that exposure or investigation. The research is to be done over the entire semester. The research paper should be a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 7 pages, not including, references and cover page. The paper must be written using APA 6th edition style format, double spaced and utilizing the Times New Roman font type and 12-point font size. The submitted paper will be checked for plagiarism and the appropriate sanctions applied (see pages 15-16 on the syllabus). Submitted papers must not be a compilation of quotes and those submitted in this format will be given a zero, even if the quotes are cited in the paper (see pages 15-16 of the syllabus).
The following are important guiding questions that must be answered in your paper.
1. Definitions of whistleblowing–legal and otherwise. For example, when actors report being sexually harassed by a film producer, is that a variety of whistleblowing? What is whistleblowing?
2.Online research of whistleblowing in the U.S. government–what offices exist, what cases have been tried, and what protections are offered for whistleblowers? For example, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has an Office of the Whistleblower. The U.S. Department of Labor offers a Whistleblower Protection Program. The Department of Energy lists the whistleblowing cases it has been involved in.
3.Online and library research of whistleblowing in the professions you as a student want to go into, such as the film industry, finance. Accounting, computer and informational technology, business management, marketing, the military, human resources, and so on.
4.Selection of a whistleblower to study (e.g., Sherron Watkins, Enron; Edward Snowden, NSA; Jeffrey Wigand, the tobacco industry, etc.). Consider looking for local whistleblowers who may have been profiled in regional newspapers. Locating individuals from our local communities who are whistleblowers, will hopefully make this project more “real.” There needs to be enough information publicly available to develop a substantive profile of the person’s organizational role and motivations for exposing unethical behavior. Hence, before selecting the whistleblower to study, make sure you are able to find adequate information that would meet your paper requirements.
5.Analysis of the follower’s ethical decision-making process. What considerations were weighed? What pressures (internal and external) did the whistleblower experience before and after deciding to expose a company’s unethical behavior?
6.What was the effect of the whistleblowing on the accused individual(s) and company? Acceptance of responsibility? Denial?
7.Summary of the outcome. Was there a trial? A verdict? An appeal? A settlement out of court? Was the follower changed in some way because of this experience?
8.What takeaway lessons about followership are there from this event?
Use Chapter 13 (Followership) in the Northouse textbook to guide your response to this research paper.

What is important is a well constructed argument that reflects class lectures and discussions as well as suggested research and articles in your textbook pertaining to the topic. If this is done thoroughly, the essay will receive an A. When some elements are missing but the structure is solid the essay will receive a B. C grade for essays that do not refer to class lectures and discussions and/or are too short. F for no essay.

The topic for theory #3 is kantian ethics.

Theory Summary #3: Kantian ethics. UNIT 5 | Deontology and Kantian Ethics – Ch. 6
In your own words, you will be required to summarize the key components of the ethical theories we study. This is to be a purely factual summary, no personal opinions or criticisms. You are essentially giving a factual report on a given ethical theory. These will be assigned in the first half of the semester and each one will focus on a single topic. Summary word count needs to be a minimum of 250 words (with a 300 word maximum) each to demonstrate a sufficient understanding on your part. There should be little to no quoting. This assignment is meant to be a restatement of the material in your words.
The topic for Theory #3 is Kantian Ethics. (I recommend a brief explanation of Deontological ethics at the beginning of your summary, with a smooth transition into Kant’s particular view of morality.)

If, on the other hand, you were angered at the cheating and subsequent lying (to your friend by their partner) and your anger was located in the ideal of promise-keeping, a value for truth-telling, and relational fidelity, then you are clearly using virtue ethics.

In a three-page paper, no more than 1200 words, no less than 950 words, double spaced, size 12 font, one-inch margins, address the following:
1) Describe one ethical dilemma you struggled with in your life. Put your description in a personal and historical context; in other words, use I statements, and locate yourself within the place, time, and relationships. Do not spend more than a page and a half on your description. 50 Points
2) Analyze the dilemma by using theoretical tools provided by the text, handouts, or lecture slides. E.g., Schools of ethics or Lonergan’s operations of consciousness, etc. 50 Points
Helpful Hints:
1. Have a concise introduction, no more than one paragraph, no less than three sentences.
2. Clearly, and early on, state your dilemma in one sentence. E.g., “My ethical dilemma consisted of whether or not I tell my friend Emma (use pseudonyms) that her partner Elijah is cheating on her,” or “My dilemma was whether I leave my insurance information on the parked car I hit or whether I drive off,” or “The moral conflict I experienced was whether I report the incident I witnessed or whether I remain silent.”
3. Do not include any irrelevant information – there is not enough space in this short paper. E.g., if it is the first dilemma above, I don’t need to know about Emma’s relationship with her mother, or where she works, or Elijah’s preference for partying (unless it is relevant).
4. Do not leave out relevant information. 4a. if after your description your reader does not know what actually happened, or the gravity of what happened, then you are not saying enough. (e.g., leaving out what you meant by theft or cheating (taking something trivial or theft of the paycheck from a single mother; holding hands cheating or sexual intercourse cheating?). 4b. if you don’t feel comfortable revealing relevant information, then you probably shouldn’t. I.e., the case is too close and you need to pick another one. to write about.
5. If your dilemma involves a serious crime consider the following before writing your paper. FERPA protects your privacy against inappropriate sharing by faculty and administration. But it does not protect against a subpoena and the like.
6. Since this is YOUR dilemma, you need to carefully state what YOU chose to do and WHY you chose to do it. This will reveal your preferred school of ethics in this instance. E.g., If you worried that Emma could, with continued sexual activity with Elijah who is cheating, acquire an STD, or that Elijah could bring another life into the world causing Emma emotional and financial stress, then you are clearly using consequentialism. If you worry that your source for the information is unreliable and that Emma will drop you as a friend if you tell her, then also consequentialism. If, on the other hand, you were angered at the cheating and subsequent lying (to your friend by their partner) and your anger was located in the ideal of promise-keeping, a value for truth-telling, and relational fidelity, then you are clearly using Virtue Ethics. Make sure you explain the theory (Lonergan or Schools) you are drawing on and how it applies in detail.
5. Based on thousands of past papers I have read, your first sentence is the most likely sentence to have grammatical or stylistic issues, and of all paragraphs, your first one is the most likely be the least readable. Suggestion: write your introductory paragraph LAST.
6. Finally, come up with a concise summary conclusion about whether you would make the same choice knowing what you know now, or something you learned about your self.
