Conclusion: technical and substantive summary of only key findings (i.e.: both significant and non-significant relationships found and the numeric results/key statistics which evidence/indicate these findings).

PART A: STATISTICAL TASK:
1. Using point and click method run an EXPLORATORY FACTOR ANLAYSIS, & RELIABILITY ANALYSES.
2. After assessing the reliability of each component/factor, use syntax or point and click method to create STANDARDIZED SCALES for each composite measure represented in the latent structures. Only scale those variables that meet the Cronbach’s alpha cut-off of 0.6 or higher. Be sure to properly label your new computed interval-ratio like variables at the end of the data set.
3. Using point and click run the most appropriate UNIVARIATE STATISTICS and GRAPHS on your new scale(s).
4. Save your work and email your .spv file to yourself.
Part B: INTERPRETATION
Title Page: A proper title that speaks to your analysis and variables.
Research Problem: Introduction of topic area, statement of research question(s) to be addressed (including any sub-questions with controls); Statement of the independent and dependent variables to be investigated, statement of control variables (if applicable). For each variable: the question asked in the survey, the response categories and the value labels for each response category, level of measurement (i.e.: nominal, ordinal, I/R) and type of variable (i.e.: string, categorical, discrete or continuous) with explanation and justification for responses with respect to criteria for the level of measurement and type of variable.
Method: Secondary data analysis explained (i.e.: what is secondary data and why is it being used ex: existing data collected by someone else and they are used for convenience and low cost), statement of data set that will be used to investigate the hypotheses, why the data set was chosen (ex: because it included the specific variables related to my research topic/research question).
Data Modification(s), if any: Explanation of need to recode/scale any of the variables
(ex: why recoding was necessary, how new variable and categories were created from old variable, and value labels assigned to new categories, level of measurement and type of variable for all recoded variables).
Results: Results of statistical analysis are DISCUSSED AND INTERPRETED. Both technical (i.e.: numerical) results are reported and substantive messages (i.e.: interpretation in words of what the numbers imply/mean/represent) are articulated OF ALL STATS YOU RUN.
Conclusion: Technical and substantive summary of ONLY key findings (i.e.: both significant and non-significant relationships found and the numeric results/key statistics which evidence/indicate these findings). Relates these findings back to the null hypotheses for EACH statistical procedure. Relates the findings back to the main research question and sub-questions posed. No discussion of numbers here please.
SPSS Output and Formatting: Output that is CORRECT and COMPLETE including original and recoded variables, definition and labelling of recoded variables with appropriate titles; Graphs titled and numbered; typed, d/spaced, stapled securely with page numbers and 1” margins, subheadings and references.
PLEASE NOTE: Your write-up should clearly direct the reader to your original tables
(i.e., see Table 1). Make sure all SPSS output tables are labeled properly with a title. Failure to do so will result in a .25 deduction per table.
All assignments should be typed [12 font], double-spaced with 1” margins on all sides
(i.e., should follow a specific writing style like APA, Chicago Manual, etc.). No photocopied SPSS outputs/syntax or copied work from other class mates will be accepted. If such a situation is found, then a grade of ZERO for that assignment will be given. Your statistical interpretation and application of techniques should reflect your own thinking and writing! No late assignments will be accepted, unless proper documentation is provided. Two marks per day, including weekends, will be deducted each, if assignments are overdue without proper documentation.

The purpose of the case study analysis and findings is for you to utilize the knowledge and skills developed in this course to evaluate the psychological methods and theoretical models of criminal behavior as well as the police psychology and the psychological aspects of all participants in the criminal justice process relative to a specific criminal episode.

Case Study Analysis and Findings
The final assignment for this course is a Case Study Analysis and Findings. An overview of forensic psychology as it relates to the criminal justice process should be included.
This course has addressed issues of psychological theory and practice relative to the functioning of the criminal justice system. These impacts range from the offender, to law enforcement and investigations, to practices and legalities of law in the courtroom, to the participation and impact of victims and witnesses, and to treatment and sentencing rendered in the correctional environment. Research continues regarding the biological, genetic, psychological, and social impacts on mental health and resulting behavior. These findings will continue to find their way into the legal implications of the psychological influences on behavior.
The focus of your Case Study Analysis and Findings paper will be based, in large part, on the weekly assignments you completed throughout the course. In each of the weekly assignments, you address a particular aspect of the overall criminal case and offender that you selected in Week 1.
In the Week 1 Literature Review assignment, you provide the resources necessary for each phase of your final analysis and findings.
In the Week 2 Case Summary and Offender Profile assignment, you provide an analysis of the behavior of the offender relative to the psychological history and evaluation of the offender.
In the Week 3 Investigative Psychology assignment, you provide an analysis of the behavior of the investigators including the analysis of the crime scene. This assignment also describes the psychological, behavioral, environmental, and cognitive factors that influence the investigation, including intervention strategies to reduce the impact of stress on law enforcement.
In the Week 4 Legal Psychology and Victimization assignment, you provide a discussion on the role of the psychological profile of the offender and the victims have on the presentation of evidence in court, including the analysis of legal psychology as it is implemented in the criminal justice process.
Finally, in the Week 5 Psychological Treatment in Correctional Settings assignment, you provide a discussion on the impacts the psychological make–up of offenders have on the functional responsibilities of incarceration facilities and how the biases and assumptions of correctional service providers influence their assessment of and interaction with these offenders.
Utilizing your research and analyses completed for the Weeks 1 through 5 assignments, consider the psychological methods and theoretical models of criminal behavior as well as the police psychology and the psychological aspects of all participants in the criminal justice process relative to the specific criminal episode selected in Week 1. Present your findings within the continuing context of the endogenous and exogenous theories of criminal behavior and the analysis of how our biases and assumptions influence our assessments of individuals. Correlate these to the cultural-based behavior patterns that may be specific to certain segments of the population with an evaluation of the potential impact and intervention strategies that may be utilized to reduce the impact of stress on law enforcement personnel.
In your Final Research Paper
Evaluate the theory of criminal behavior related to the selected case.
Analyze the biases and assumptions that influenced participants in the case process.
Address each of these participants:
Investigators
Prosecutors
Defense attorney(s)
Jurors
Judge
Analyze the role the psychological profile of the offender played in how the investigation was conducted and in any subsequent court proceedings.
Discuss the impact of this case on future actions and ideology of the criminal justice system relative to the psychological issues presented (or denied) in this case.
The Final Research Paper

Discuss the future of psychology in the criminal justice system from multiple views including: the role of psychology in offending; how psychology influences criminal investigations; the impact of psychology in the courtroom; psychological interventions in the correctional environment.

As scholars, practitioners and leaders in the areas of psychology and criminal justice, it is important to not only understand the past as it applies to the present, but to also extrapolate historical and current information to hypothesize the future impacts and areas necessitating additional research. Heilbrun & Brooks (Links to an external site.) (2010) and Otto & Heilbrun (Links to an external site.) (2002) suggest areas where psychological profiling could be expanded, areas of integration with other fields and study, and evaluate the impact of technology on psychological profiling. Discuss where you believe the future of psychological profiling is heading, whether it is appropriate, and what suggestions you have regarding criminal psychological profiling.
Guided Response: Your initial post should be at least 300 words in length. Support your observations with examples from the required materials and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two or your colleagues’ posts by Day 7. Discuss the future of psychology in the criminal justice system from multiple views including: the role of psychology in offending; how psychology influences criminal investigations; the impact of psychology in the courtroom; psychological interventions in the correctional environment. Include the short–term and long–term impacts of psychological research on the criminal justice process, and whether you agree with your peer’s views – and why or why not. Continue to monitor the discussion forum until 5:00 p.m. (Mountain Time) on Day 7, and respond with robust dialogue to anyone who replies to your initial post.

Guided response: your initial post should be at least 300 words in length.

Research continues to substantiate the increase of positive outcomes when psychological issues are identified early (in childhood or adolescence) and interventions are instituted at that time rather than when an individual has researched adulthood. Chapter 13 in Bartol & Bartol (2019) discusses the concept of multisystemic therapy for antisocial juveniles. Recognizing that some mental disorders cannot be properly identified until early adulthood, there are many, including parents, who suggest this is inappropriate and an unreasonable intrusion into parents’ rights and responsibilities in raising their children.
Guided Response: Your initial post should be at least 300 words in length. Support your observations with examples from the required materials and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two or your colleagues’ posts by Day 7. Discuss therapeutic interventions for antisocial juveniles; the successes and the shortcomings. Include the short–term and long–term impacts of such therapies and the impacts of no intervention. Does society have a responsibility to these youth and to society to identify and intervene in these emotional/psychological areas? Do you agree with your peer’s views? Why, or why not? Continue to monitor the discussion forum until 5:00 p.m. (Mountain Time) on Day 7, and respond with robust dialogue to anyone who replies to your initial post

Psychological Treatment in Correctional Settings
This week’s reading assignments include chapters relating to the provision of psychological treatments in correctional settings. Chapter 12 discusses the findings of Boothby & Clements (2000) survey of psychologists working in state and federal correctional facilities across the U.S. Increasingly, the prison populations reflect a high number of inmates suffering from identified mental illnesses. This presents issues for corrections personnel who are responsible for the safety of prisoners as well as the safety of staff. The goals of the correctional psychological service providers may not be consistent with the overall goals of the institution. The mental health status of offenders impacts staffing considerations, both in number and in skills, of incarceration facilities. Large populations of inmates with mental health issues can impact the stress levels of staff, which can influence their job performance as well as their interpersonal relationships.
Address the following points in your paper
Discuss the impacts of the psychological make–up of offenders has on the functional responsibilities of incarceration facilities.
Discuss how the biases and assumptions of correctional service providers influence their assessment of and interaction with these offenders.
Explain your findings within the continuing context of the endogenous and exogenous theories of criminal behavior and the analysis of how our biases and assumptions influence our assessments of individuals.
Correlate your findings to the cultural-based behavior patterns specific to segments of the population with an evaluation of the potential impact and intervention strategies utilized to reduce the impact of stress on law enforcement personnel.
