Explain how transnationalism OR postcolonialism are important frameworks for analyzing gender and sexuality. Demonstrate by using at least one specific example from any course reading.
There are some many important herstorical/historical moments and movements. However, there would be no herstory or history without the people who actually make said moments.
Things to Do:
DO feel free to choose a woman, man, or a non-gender conforming person who embodies feminist and womanist principles. You don’t have to be a woman to be either a feminist or a womanist. Please note your influencer can be living or dead.
DO your research! You are going to have to spend significant time getting to know the work of your influencer. Look at blogs, biographies, journal articles and documentaries to gather an accurate assessment of their connection to feminism or womanism.
For this portion of the portfolio you are going to choose two (2) folks who embody feminist and womanist principles in their work and cultural contributions.
Your first influencer should be someone from your desired career field. You are to write (2) pages that summarize at least three (3) accomplishments from your influencer that embody feminist or womanist principles. Make sure you always connect how their contributions link to your desired field. Finally, what are (2) lessons that a contemporary generation can learn from your influencer.
1. Paper shows specific and particular knowledge of the influencer, their contributions, and the sociohistorical context of which s/he or they emerged. (50 pts).
2. Student defines feminism/womanist principles and directly links them to contributions of their influencer. (15 pts)
3. Student directly expresses and connects why the influencer is important figure in their field and their admired field. (15 pts)
4. Student gives two original thoughts regarding the lessons learned from the influencer for contemporary generations.(10 pts)
5. Student uses critical language, complete sentences, and has clearly proofread and presented a final, polished publish. (10 pts)
TOTAL: 100 pts
Answer these two questions
What is beautiful to you? Does it or has it changed overtime?
What is ugly to you or do you notice or think about what is ugly? Thinking of the idea of “Beauty and the Beast,” does your sense of outward beauty shift if you find inner-beauty in someone?

This chapter obviously builds on the prior one about gendered organizational communication. I would like for you to examine the disparities between how men and women are treated/viewed by society at large and how they communicate with one another or attempt to express their opinions.
Another question to consider is this: due to their “marginalized” status, do women (in this instance, female reporters) feel the need to be “on the attack” rather than simply playing their prescribed passive role as interviewers or purveyors or information/opinion.
book – Gawande, Atul. 2002. Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science. New York: Picador.
Gawande Paper #1 is a reaction paper that covers Chapters 1-7 (pages 1-129)
The papers should be at least 1250 words (approx. 5 pages double spaced).
Please use Times New Roman font, 10-12 point.
Do not summarize the text – we’ve all read it, so just jump straight to your reflections on the content.
Do not describe the authors background or credentials or any other ‘google-able’ information. The focus of this assignment is your own reflections on and connections to the text.
No need to include chapter names and lengthy quotes.
If you use quotes at all, use them VERY sparingly. If you do use any, remember that quotations taken directly from a text should have quotation marks at the beginning and end. The authors’ last name, date, and page numbers follow the end quotes.
Please respond to each of the following prompts in your reflection:
What was your general impression of Dr. Gawande? What do you think about his writing style?
We bring our own opinions and experiences to how we read and understand a book. Did any of the stories offered by Dr. Gawande trigger strong emotional feelings in you, the reader?
Did anything lead you to try to learn more? Was there anything that surprised you?
As a surgeon, Gawande has people’s lives in his hands. Why do you think he includes so many stories about mistakes?
Dr. Gawande writes about the role of mystery and superstition in medicine. Why do you think he includes these sorts of ideas?

Watch a film from the list below. For this assignment, you’ll watch a documentary film, so the treatment of gender issues will likely be top-level. As you watch the film, think about why the filmmakers chose to make a film on this topic, how they approach the topic (what’s their angle?), and what they hoped to accomplish by making a film on this topic — what’s the film’s purpose? what do the filmmakers want you to do, think, or feel after watching the film?
Write about it
After watching the film and taking notes, write an analytical response paper that does the following:
summarizes the important parts of the film in a brief paragraph,
identifies and explains the film’s central gender issue(s) and the claim or claims it makes about gender, and
responds to the film’s claim(s) about gender using your own ideas, along with concepts that we have covered in this course
Your paper should be a total of 600-750 words (2-3 pages) long. It should have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion, written in grammatically correct sentences and cohesive paragraphs. The summary should be only about one paragraph at the beginning. Most of the essay should be your response to the film’s gender issues. You should give your paper a title and format it in MLA style.
