“Good evening class & Professor,
I struggled a with this week’s discussion, hopefully I am on the right track. For this week I chose to write about chronic adaptations to the circulatory system. The cardio-respiratory system works together to get oxygen to the working muscles and remove carbon dioxide from the body. During exercise the muscles need more oxygen to contract, and they produce more carbon dioxide as a waste product. The cardiovascular system provides the link between pulmonary ventilation and oxygen usage at the cellular level. During exercise, efficient delivery of oxygen to working skeletal and cardiac muscles is vital for maintenance of ATP production by aerobic mechanisms. Aerobic training results in cardiac hypertrophy. This increases stroke volume and cardiac output, allowing a greater volume of blood to be released from the heart, providing more oxygen for the athlete to use. Increased heart rate recovery rates in athletes tell us that the heart rate will return to its resting levels quicker than that of an individual who does not train on a regular basis. This is due to the greater efficiency of the cardiovascular system to produce energy aerobically. Stroke volume will result in the heart not having to beat as often to supply the required blood flow. Aerobic training will also result in a slower increase in heart rate during exercise and a lower steady state that is reached sooner. Overall effective aerobic exercise has proven to produce adaptations at both the molecular and macroscopic levels. If aerobic exercise is maintained for an extended period of time it can lead to chronic adaptations with positive outcomes.”
