Rhetorical analysis involves critical thinking about how – and how well – an author presents an argument and persuades their audience. This week, you are going to practice analyzing rhetoric by examining the rhetorical appeals used by an author to persuade readers; then you are going to determine if they were effective or not.
Read/review the Week 2 Materials prior to beginning this discussion. These resources will help you identify rhetorical appeals and analyze how they are being used.
Carefully read and annotate the essay, “Blue-Collar Brilliance” Download “Blue-Collar Brilliance” by Mike Rose. Read carefully and take good notes of main ideas and rhetorical appeals.
Identify at least two rhetorical appeals the author uses to persuade his readers that his argument is true.
Clearly explain how the appeals are being used by paraphrasing or quoting examples directly from the text. Refer directly to the appeals by name; for example, you might say, “Rose uses logos when he refers to…”
After you have explained how the author uses two rhetorical appeals, analyze how well you think his appeals work to persuade his readers and why. You might say, “The examples Rose uses to show how different types of labor involves different types of intelligence works well to persuade the audience of his argument because …” Alternatively, you might argue that the examples are not effective for persuading his audience.
Whatever argument you make about the author’s use of rhetorical appeals, whether he is effective or not, you need to support your points with evidence from the article or explanations of your own.
Be sure to explicitly use the terminology of the rhetorical appeals (Ex. refer to “logos” when you’re analyzing logos), and be sure to give examples of the rhetorical appeal to illustrate how the author uses them. Finally, don’t forget to explain how well the appeals work to support the author’s argument and persuade his audience.
