Unit 8 Discussion 1
COLLAPSE
Member roles and communication patterns are formed early on in the group session. Social workers learn these by observing, assessing, and gathering information about the members and how they interact with one another or their lack of communication. There are some times when these behaviors might become dysfunctional. One of these times would be if a group member were disrespectful towards the other members by interrupting them, judging them, or treating them with a lack of respect. In situations such as these, it is best to approach it with kindness, compassion, and understanding because Toseland & Rivas (2017) expressed that every behavior has a reason behind it and as social workers, it is our job to help facilitate members to self reflect to understand why their behavior is dysfunctional and how they are affecting other members and their goal attainment. As a social worker, I would address this issue with the member cautiously and ask them to describe theory behavior and how they are piercing that behavior. I would then ask the other group members to express how that member’s behavior is affecting them and how they are actually perceiving it. I would make sure to identify everyone’s feelings, so each member feels heard and not like they are being attacked. Once everyone had a chance to express how they feel, I would facilitate group members to change their role behaviors in order to help the group run effectively.
