The Excel file, Baseball_Salary_Data.xlsx contains salary information of baseball players whose annual
salary is at least $2M since 1985. The data includes: yearID, teamID, leagueID, playerID, nameGiven,
salary, bats (right or left or both), throws (right or left), their debut date, and their final game date. Note
that the last name is not given in the file. The unique identifier for each player is the playerID.
a) Create a table or chart showing the number of players (with a salary of $2M or more) by year.
Create a chart showing how the average salary has changed over the years.
Based on these two charts, what can you say about the MLB salary of these players (what are
the business insights you learned)? Also create a chart that compares the maximum salary of the National League vs. American League
over the years (post 1987).
In how many years has the maximum salary of the National League been higher?
b) Create a pie chart that shows what % of players bat with left, right, or both hands. Note: Make
sure you’re not counting the same player multiple times.
d) Among the players, what percentage of them have different batting and throwing hands? Note:
As long as the batting hand is not identical to the throwing hand (e.g., L-R, R-L, Both-L, etc.), we
consider them “different.”
e) The column “debut” is coded as YYYY-MM-DD in plain text format. Add a new column called
“debutYear” and extract the YYYY part, using ”=LEFT(… , 4)” function which grabs the first 4
characters in a text. Then, add another column called “Years of Experience” calculated as: YearID
– debutYear.
Create a scatter plot with “Years of Experience” on the horizontal axis, and the Salary on the
vertical axis. Also, compute the correlation between these two variables. Can you say that the
salary and the experience are highly correlated?
f) Create a table that shows the 10 highest-paid players of all time (measured by the sum of their
annual salary). How many of these players were batting with both hands (i.e., “B” in column
“bats”).
Copy/paste your charts/tables and comments in Word or Powerpoint and submit as a PDF
document. Also please attach your Excel file.
