Imagine that you are a Communication for Social Change (CSC) expert working for an Australian consulting company. The company has been contracted by the Tasmanian Government to formulate a project that aims to promote sustainable tourism in northern Tasmania while safeguarding social, economic and environmental benefits for local communities. The main stakeholders of the project are (1) local councils, (2) the tourism industry that organises fishing tours on the rivers, (3) a local environmentalist group who are advocating to protect the endangered Tasmanian Giant Freshwater Crayfish that lives in the nearby rivers, and (4) local rural communities that make a living from farming.
You have been given the task to design a communication process that engages the key stakeholders in a dialogue to define the expected outcomes of the project – a tricky task as some of these stakeholders have conflicting interests in the use of the area. You decide to use the ‘2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’ (the Sustainable Development Goals) as a framework to legitimatise the need for a collective resolution.
Write a brief outline that describes how you plan to conduct this communication process. Which SDGs would you bring in to facilitate the dialogue and why? What methods would you use and why (including at least one participatory method)? What kind of partnerships would you foster among the key stakeholders to guarantee success?
