Week 2 Applications:
Part 1: Reflections on Sidewalk Study by Mitchell Duneier
Watch the following clip which profiles the study:
https://sru.mediaspace.kaltura.com/media/Sidewalk+%28Dykstra%29/1_j1jnaa3f
(you don’t have to watch the whole thing – watch at least through about 36 min mark- or all of it if you have time and interest!)
and then the researcher talking about the ethical challenges of the study and how he tried to resolve them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2KDgvwGFeQ&app=desktop
Then, answer the following questions:
What do you see as the strengths/limitations of this kind of ethnography as a method of social research? Do you think the same data/analysis could have been gathered with another methodology, through a standard written survey instrument for example?
What makes this study participant group a vulnerable population? (and thus requiring special ethical consideration)
What were the fears the researcher had regarding exploitation?
What was done by the researcher to reduce the exploitative aspect of the study?
Part 2: Research Methods – Designing a Study
Think about the ways in which the reading suggests modern technology has changed bullying—both the positives and the negatives. (Many of you have probably seen the documentary “Bully” and for more context you can watch what has been done since to address bullying if you have time/interest here: https://www.pbs.org/independentlens/blog/bully-update-alex/)
Now, imagine that you are a researcher who would like to study bullying. In one or two paragraphs, discuss a few (AT LEAST TWO!) different research methods that were detailed in the reading/lecture that you could use to study bullying (for example: you could select ethnography and survey…or any other 2 from those described). Be sure to discuss how these methods might have been used prior to the technological changes affecting bullying today and what methods might be more useful now.
